Please Help Support Our Students This Fall

Dear friends and past and future supporters,

There are 13 aspiring students in Athens qualified, eager to study, and with demonstrated ability to excel academically at Webster University this Fall semester.  I don’t want to have to say “I’m sorry, we don’t have the funds,” to even one of them….

The number of people displaced by war and other devastating crises and living in desperate circumstances around the world at this moment in time is a staggering 70 million, according to the latest estimate by UNHCR.

To say that the growing crises of homelessness, hunger, exploitation, and hopelessness in the city of Athens alone is difficult to witness would be an understatement.

And then there’s crisis fatigue.  If we haven’t been living under a rock, it is hard to miss the fact that there seem to be devastating crises, small and large, real and imagined, financial, military, natural, chemical, and technical, everywhere in the world.

Why then, invest in education for a few people in Greece, when there are catastrophic crises affecting so many around the world?

From my perspective – the reason why I advocate so fiercely for refugees in Greece –  is because drops of water converge to form the ocean;  small acts of kindness and caring send ripples throughout communities, lifetimes and generations;  and every human heart possesses the instinct to survive, thrive, and to contribute in a meaningful way.  I believe that the global impact of conscientious actions – or inactions – by “regular people” like you and me cannot be overestimated.

Even more powerful for me is the world-view changing perspective I gain when I get to meet and collaborate with individuals from parts of the world that previously I had only heard about in the news.  In this regard, my passion for this project is thoroughly selfish.

Will you join me in my mission to create a global community that is kind, curious, welcoming, proactive, and optimistic in forging a future that is sustainable and equitable for all humans?

We need approximately €15,000 to sponsor our 12 undergraduate and graduate students this Fall.  (We’re about half way there – we need your help now to secure tuition for these promising young people for the Fall 2019 semester).

The fine print:

100% of all donations go directly to tuition payments.

We absorb transaction and administrative fees, so 100 percent is actually allocated to tuition.

Individual sponsors can arrange to send payments through LERRN, or directly to Webster University Athens.

Once we sponsor a student in a single semester, we strive to continue sponsorship to help them meet their educational goals.  This is a long-term project with a long-term vision for elevating individuals and communities affected by war and other devastating crises.  Webster University Athens has the capacity to accept and educate many more qualified refugee students.  The breadth and impact of this program is limited only by our ability to identify and recruit willing-and-able sponsors and donors.

We wholeheartedly believe in one human family; proactively being the change we want to see in the world; and in the Greek virtue of “philotimo.”  Will you join with us in doing our part to address one of the most compelling global crises of our time?
